To make it easier for you to find your way to the latest emerging and new technology news here are our top three tips and a starter list of websites / resources.

Some of this technology could soon become part of our everyday lives. Many of us tend to read the same sources everyday out of habit and familiarity. Others might prefer a wide range of topics across many sources. This is all about preference and is part of the experience of keeping up with technology changes.

  1. Build understanding and familiarity

If you want to start understanding and tracking changes in technology I would suggest starting with a couple of sources that you find easy to read and provide you with something new on a frequent basis. Many of these sources will cover the same stories and subjects hopefully with differing observations and views. This is important as it provides a balanced view.

  1. Make sure you have diversity in news sources and platforms

Pick a mix of sources and platforms if you can – through social media, websites, newsletters and/or apps. Understand the mechanics of how your news is delivered, and where and when you consume it. After a while you might want to change the sources or delivery to broaden your base familiarity with these.

  1. Save yourself some time

If you are time poor start looking at some of the news aggregator or “read later” apps. The important thing is to build a habit that also does not becoming too time consuming yet the same time helps you keep in touch and feel informed.

Skim read across a couple of sites daily and when a subject is spiking in mentions do a bit of searching for more diversity in the discussion. This is really important, as it is easy to miss some interesting or important perspective if you read only a single source for this type of news. Below are some of the sources we use fairly regularly:

Here are some of our favourite news sources:

TechCrunch

This tends to be a very Silicon Valley – Venture Capital focussed news. The reason I read it is that it covers the thinking behind the investment in technology that will probably become part of our everyday lives either very shortly or in the near future.

Wired

This is really one of the more interesting sources focussing on science and technology news on the web. It manages to include culture and entertainment with technology news in a way that is more often than not thought provoking. These tend to be longer reads.

 TED

Big thinking ideas being shared in a way that is very accessible. The real success of this platform is the fact that it is video based and the longer pieces are around 18 minutes long. The content can be inspirational and in some cases challenging.

FastCompany

This site covers a wide spectrum of subjects relating to business, innovation, design and technology. The emphasis is really about change – who is making the changes, what is driving it, why and how.

Mashable

This has a digital marketing and pop culture focus. The editorial tends to cover trending topics which gives a good snapshot of what people are talking about or doing on the internet.

The Newspaper

I mean the digital one though. Chances are if you read a newspaper on a daily basis, it covers technology in some way. There is also a high chance they have an app or a mobile website. Start reading it and see what you think of there coverage. Compare it to the other sources you have found.
